Macchi M.33 1925 Schneider Trophy - SBS Model 1/72nd resin wonder

Part of a long and prestigious lineage of Italian Schneider trophy participants, the Macchi M.33 characterizes for the simplicity of its lines, being a cantilever monoplane flying boat. Two were built, but only one could effectively compete in the Baltimore 1925 edition of the Coupe d'Aviation Maritime Jacques Schneider, obtaining a third place.

SBS Model's resin kit is yet another jewel of precision released by this manufacturer. The step-by-step build post can be found here:

For this kit two aftermarket sets can be acquired separately from the same manufacturer: a multi-part beaching gear (article 72067) and photo-etched stainless steel rigging (72068).

The kit, given the precision of its casting and the excellent engineering, can be built without problems and with only the occasional very minor adjustment, but care and patience are as usual needed to arrive to a good result. The kit provides decals for both participating machines, covering also some minor variations. Not having to deal with the usual vertical seams is a bliss, and proper, precise and functional locating devices are of great help. The detail overall is beautiful and the engineering very clever, rendering a very charming model that can be built with pleasure by modelers with some experience.

  1. VClaudio,
A very elegant flying boat as well as your usual museum quality modeling. The colors of the Italian flag on the fin and rudder add a real splash of color. Out of curiosity, I went to the internet to learn something about the design, but had a question regarding the engine nacelle- is there a coolant radiator on one side and an oil cooler on the other?

    1. Thanks!
There is an oil cooling radiating surface underneath the nacelle at the front (darker in color in the model)and then the two "wings" at the back of the nacelle with the coolant radiators.
